The British Cave Research Association is a UK registered charity, and a constituent body of the British Caving Association, undertaking charitable activities on behalf of BCA.

BCRA's object is to promote the study of caves and associated phenomena. It attains this object by supporting cave & karst research; by encouraging original exploration (both in the UK and on expeditions overseas); by collecting and publishing speleological information; maintaining a library; and organising educational and scientific conferences and meetings.

bullet Membership / Subs. Renewals
For most of our members and subscribers, your membership/subscription expired with Cave & Karst Science 33(3) which was shipped in January 2008. UK members should have received a membership renewal notice from BCA in December 2007. All other members and subscribers should have received a renewal notice with newsletter 9 at the end of May 2008. Special Offer to ex-members.

BCRA Council has decided to no longer issue newsletters on paper. In future news will be posted to the BCRA Forum on the BCA web site. BCRA Newsletter 9 was issued in late May 2008. You can still read it online here.

C&KS 34(2) was mailed on 1 October 2008.

bullet Speleology Magazine 
Issue 12 was published in September 2008. Issue 13 is planned for later in the Autumn.

bullet Cave & Karst Science Online 
For 2008, BCRA is offering a lower membership fee to members who do not wish to receive Cave & Karst Science on paper. All members will have access to C&KS online. We are running late with the launch of this service, further details here.

  bullet Hidden Earth 2008 26-28 Sept, Otley, Yorkshire
The annual caving conference and weekend convention. Field trips, trade and club stands, competitions, talks, discussion groups, entertainment ...
 
  This year's caving conference will be at at Prince Henry's Grammar School, Otley, West Yorkshire. (See Location Info). Otley is situated close to the cities of Leeds and Bradford and is on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales national park. See the UK caving meetings list to receive brief notices; or visit BCA's Hidden Earth Forum to read the latest discussion or announcements.  
  BCRA Cave Science Symposium 2009 7 March 2009, Sheffield
Presentations of short papers on Cave & Karst Science topics.
 
  This one day Symposium will take place on Saturday 7 March 2009 at Sheffield University. A Cave Science Field Trip to Creswell Crags on Sunday 8 March is also planned. Further details on both these events will be provided as soon as it becomes available.  
  BCRA Cave Technology Symposium 2009 17-19 April 2009, South Wales
Presentations of short topics on cave surveying, electronics, computing, lighting, photography, cave radio, radio-location and other aspects of caving "technology". Abstracts are required by mid-March 2009
 
  This one-day symposium (on 18 April) is being hosted by members of BCRA's special interest groups: the Cave Surveying Group (CSG) and the Cave Radio & Electronics Group (CREG). Technical facilities will be provided by the Hidden Earth technical team. The event will co-incide with a weekend CSG field meeting.  
  Contributions are invited on any aspect of caving technology in the form of short lectures, poster papers, or more informal practical sessions. Cave survey posters and cave photographs are particularly welcome for display.

For a more complete listing of UK caving events see the British Caving Association's newsletter [at the time of writing (Jan 2005) this is not available on-line, only on paper]. The cavers' magazine Descent also carries an events diary and is obtainable in caving shops (and some climbing and outdoor shops) throughout the country. For International Events the UIS online diary carries information on events world-wide. BCRA has sponsored an Internet e-mailing list to keep you in touch with arrangements for caving meetings. Council meetings are usually held in March, June and November. These are not public meetings, but members are informed so that relevant business can be scheduled.
